Mount Tarawera / Waimangu Volcanic Valley

MOUNT TARAWERA | WAIMANGU GEOTHERMAL VALLEY

MOUNT TARAWERA / WAIMANGU VOLCANIC VALLEY

Tour Code: 3A

Departing our City Lakefront pier, experience the thrill of a floatplane takeoff before climbing around Mokoia Island. Once you ascend over the ridgeline, a previously hidden world of lakes and volcanic peaks spreads out below your feet. The highlight of the trip is Mount Tarawera – at 1,111 meters in elevation, this majestic volcano dominates the surrounding landscape and serves as the centerpiece to the stunning 14 lakes around its base.

Flying above Mount Tarawera provides views of cavernous craters, revealing the power of the largest eruption in New Zealand’s living memory. The 1886 eruption created a 17 km volcanic rift line, which your pilot will fly you along, ending with spectacular aerial views of Waimangu Volcanic Valley. Take in the steaming cliffs, the vibrant Inferno Crater and the world’s largest hot spring: Frying Pan Lake.

Return to Rotorua via Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) and Lake Rotokākahi (Green Lake) – from the air, you can best appreciate how fitting these names are. You will also fly over the Whakarewarewa Forest and Thermal Reserve. Your trip will conclude by flying over Sulfur Bay, Rotorua City, and Mt Ngongotaha before landing again on Lake Rotorua.
