MOUNT TARAWERA / WAIMANGU VOLCANIC VALLEY PLUS HOT POOLS
Tour Code: 3AH
Tour Code: 3AH
Your experience begins with a thrilling floatplane takeoff from Lake Rotorua. From the first moment in the air, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of Mokoia Island, the steaming shoreline of Sulphur Bay, and the vibrant cityscape of Rotorua. Your flight path takes you over Whakarewarewa Forest and Thermal Reserve, before gliding above the jewel-toned Blue and Green Lakes—Lake Tikitapu and Lake Rotokākahi. With a total of 12 volcanic crater lakes in view, this region offers one of the most diverse and scenic lake districts in New Zealand.
As the journey continues, your pilot will guide you toward the world-renowned Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the youngest geothermal system on the planet. From above, witness the vivid colours of Inferno Crater, the steaming cliffs, and Frying Pan Lake—the world’s largest hot spring. This aerial perspective offers unmatched views of the valley’s ever-changing geothermal landscape.
Next comes the highlight of the flight: Mount Tarawera. This sacred and powerful site was the epicentre of the devastating 1886 eruption. You’ll fly the full length of the mountain’s dramatic 8km-long rift, peering deep into its craters from the air. It’s a striking reminder of the region’s volcanic power and beauty.
From the northern slopes of Tarawera, the adventure transitions from sky to water as your floatplane descends onto Lake Rotoiti. Your pilot will taxi gently toward Manupirua Bay, home to the iconic Lake Rotoiti hot pools—a true geothermal oasis, accessible only by boat or aircraft. These hot pools have a esteemed history as they are the oldest commercially operating hot pools in New Zealand!
Tucked into a quiet bay fringed by native bush, these natural hot pools have been soothing locals and visitors for generations. With seven geothermally heated pools of varying temperatures, you can find your perfect spot and unwind. Dip into the lake for a refreshing cool-off, lounge on a sun chair, or enjoy a snack and drink from the on-site café. There’s even a waterslide and jumping platform for the adventurous.
After 90 minutes of pure relaxation, your pilot will give you a friendly 10-minute signal. Use the changing facilities to get ready for the return leg of your flight. Then, step back aboard your waiting floatplane for the final takeoff from Lake Rotoiti. Your return journey offers a final glimpse of Rotorua’s volcanic landscape before gently touching down on Lake Rotorua, back at our central city base.
