Tour Description

Departing from Rotorua’s city lakefront, soar into an unforgettable journey across one of New Zealand’s most geologically and culturally significant landscapes. Your adventure begins with a scenic takeoff from Lake Rotorua, where sweeping views of the city and iconic landmarks such as Mokoia Island and Sulphur Bay stretch out below. As you climb above the lakes district, the beauty of the region truly unfolds.

Beneath you, twelve distinct crater lakes shimmer, each formed by volcanic activity over thousands of years. You’ll fly over Lakes Okareka, Okataina, and the expansive Lake Tarawera, gaining a unique aerial perspective on the ancient volcanic caldera that shapes the Rotorua landscape.

Approaching the majestic Mt Tarawera, your pilot will fly you along the full length of the volcano’s 8 km rift line—an immense scar left by the 1886 eruption, which split the mountain in two and devastated the surrounding landscape. As you pass over deep craters, lava domes, and rugged ridgelines, you’ll get a firsthand look at the raw power of nature that reshaped this area.

Next, you’ll touch down on the summit of Mt Tarawera for a 15-minute guided exploration. This is sacred ground, rich with Māori history and cultural significance. Your pilot will share stories of the mountain, its eruption, and its ongoing role in both local heritage and modern conservation. Thanks to over three decades of Wilding Pine removal—funded in part by your landing fees—the summit remains mostly free of invasive species, allowing native flora to thrive and the volcanic landscape to shine.

From the summit, the views are nothing short of breathtaking. On a clear day, you may spot Whakaari/ White Island steaming in the Bay of Plenty to the north, and the snow-capped volcanoes of Tongariro National Park to the south. Every direction offers something different—lush native bush, crater lakes, and expansive farmland.

After soaking in the sights and stories from the summit of Mt Tarawera, you’ll reboard your waiting helicopter for the return flight to Rotorua. Your final leg takes you over the towering canopy of the Whakarewarewa Redwood Forest, a stunning contrast to the volcanic terrain you’ve just explored.

Throughout the flight, your pilot will provide expert commentary on the region’s dramatic geology, cultural heritage, and unique ecosystems—making this more than just a flight, but a truly immersive and educational experience.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong local, this tour offers a fresh and unforgettable perspective on Rotorua’s most iconic landscapes.
